The Legend of the Kesodo
Ceremony
Once upen a time, there were a couple loving a Mount Bromo,
East Java. The new couple wanted to have a child. The had married for a long
time but they hadn’t got a baby. Every time they prayed to the Gods, asking for
a child
The
couple : “Dear God, give me the child. I'll keep him.”
suddenly there was a loud voice from the sky
The Lord :”You are going to give birth to a baby,
and later you will give birth to many children. But I have a requirement for
you to obey, if you really want to have children.”
Father :”Whetever you ask, My Lord.”
Mother :”We
will do it.”
The Lord :”You
must sacrifice your first son for the gods.”
The Couple :”Okay, We will do it, My Lord.”
Then, the wife got pregnant and gave birth to a son named
Kesuma and after kesuma, she birth to eleven children. The couple forgot their
promise their promise to sacrifice their son to the god.
One day, the volcano erupted, followed earthquakes and thunder
in the sky to remind the couple to keep they promise to God.
Mother :”
I don’t want to sacrifice kesuma, I love him.”
Father :” But we had promised to sacrifice
it if we have childs.”
Mother :”
I know, but I can’t.”
Kesuma :”
Dad, Mom, I do not want to see you die due to this disaster, I'll save you
all.”
Mother :”Don’t
do it Kesuma!”
Kesuma :”I
would sacrifice myself in order that our village will live in peace. For the next times, you all have to
sacrifice animals and crops to the gods.”
Then he
jumped onto the creater ot the volcano. Amazingly, the earthquakeand the
eruption stopped at once. Since that, the people in the area hold an annual
ceremony called the Kesodo ceremony.
